Why we choose WooCommerce over Shopify

When it comes to choosing the right ecommerce platform for your business, itโ€™s one of the most important decisions youโ€™ll make. The platform you choose will affect everything from how quickly you can launch, how easily you can scale, how much control you retain, and ultimately how profitable and adaptable your online store will be.

At Browndog, we have an experienced team of developers, and where possible, we always choose to work with WooCommerce, rather than Shopify. This is a choice we havenโ€™t taken lightly, in fact, it comes from years of experience building, scaling and supporting ecommerce brands that want flexibility, ownership and long-term value – not just a quick launch.

Hereโ€™s why we continue to choose WooCommerce:

Speed and reliability at launch

Shopify is often marketed as the fastest route to getting an ecommerce store live. Because itโ€™s fully hosted, much of the infrastructure is handled for you. However, when WooCommerce is delivered by an experienced agency, that perceived advantage largely disappears.

We use managed, performance-optimised hosting as standard. Security, updates, backups and uptime monitoring are handled as part of our ongoing support.

Our websites are configured with advanced caching, CDN integration, and server-level performance optimisation.

This results in a fast, stable and secure WooCommerce platform that launches just as efficiently as Shopify. In reality, launch timelines are almost always driven by content readiness, design approvals, product data and payment configuration – not the ecommerce platform itself.

Advanced ecommerce and subscription capability

WooCommerce is one of the most mature and flexible ecommerce systems available, particularly when it comes to subscriptions. With WooCommerce subscriptions, we can support variable and configurable products; tiered pricing models; bundles and grouped products; upgrades, downgrades and pauses; flexible renewal logic, and fully customisable checkout journeys.

Unlike Shopify, thereโ€™s no reliance on proprietary payment systems or mandatory third-party apps to unlock core functionality. This flexibility is especially important for subscription businesses, as pricing structures can evolve, product groupings change, and customer journeys need to be refined over time. WooCommerce allows the platform to adapt alongside the business, rather than forcing the business to adapt to the platform.

Scalability without rebuilding

Occasionally, clients will ask us if they should choose Shopify because it scales more effectively than WooCommerce. When implemented correctly, WooCommerce scales exceptionally well.

WooCommerce can support growing product catalogues, increasing traffic volumes, international expansion, and complex pricing structures.

When we build and update websites, scaling is achieved through infrastructure improvements, enhanced hosting, database optimisation and performance tuning, rather than re-platforming.

There are no pricing tiers based on revenue or a percentage of sales, we simply charge a flat rate hosting fee dictated by your usage and needs (this is reviewed with you regularly so you understand cost implications).

Crucially, there is no requirement to upgrade in order to unlock certain functionality. In contrast, scaling on Shopify often means higher monthly subscription costs, additional transaction fees, greater reliance on paid apps, and tier based feature access.

With WooCommerce, we control the architecture from the outset, so growing your business doesnโ€™t mean giving up a chunk of your margin!

Managed support without platform limitations

WooCommerce is sometimes described as requiring more ongoing management. Thatโ€™s only true when itโ€™s unsupported or poorly maintained. With our hosting and updates package we ensure:

  • Core and plugin updates are managed and tested proactively
  • Security is continuously monitored
  • Performance is regularly optimised
  • Compatibility issues are handled before they become problems

Ongoing costs are predictable and not tied to revenue or arbitrary platform tiers.

Rather than limiting flexibility to reduce complexity, we build robust systems and support them properly, allowing your ecommerce platform to evolve alongside your commercial strategy.

Ownership, flexibility and long-term value

The most significant difference between Shopify and WooCommerce is ownership.
With WooCommerce:

  • You own the platform
  • You own your data
  • You control the roadmap
  • You are not locked into a closed ecosystem

There are no restrictions on how your site can evolve, no external limitations dictating how your business model should operate, and the platform is adaptable because itโ€™s built on open technology.

With Shopify, you operate within a controlled environment. Customisation is governed by platform rules and long-term costs/feature access is determined externally. While we acknowledge that this works fine for many businesses, we want to work with ambitious brands that are planning for growth, and we believe WooCommerce is the best way.

Of course, weโ€™re also keen to highlight when it does make sense to choose Shopify:

Shopify is a strong solution for businesses looking for:

  • A fast, standardised eCommerce launch
  • Minimal involvement in technical decisions
  • A more templated, app-driven ecosystem

Weโ€™ve met many clients that consider Shopify to be the right platform for them and whilst we will always do our best to support each one, we also like to be completely transparent in where our experience lies, and that is with WooCommerce.

Why we recommend WooCommerce
For brands with long-term growth ambitions – particularly those with subscription models or evolving product strategies – WooCommerce offers:

  • Greater flexibility
  • Stronger ownership
  • Predictable costs
  • Better long-term commercial value

The platform itself is not the risk. Choosing a platform that limits your future options is.
