Welcome to our newest edition of ‘getting to know the team’, where we’re introducing Digital Marketing Manager, drone enthusiast, and new owner to the latest puppy to join Browndog, Otis.

If you’ve been reading our series this year, you’ll know that our team is the most important aspect of Browndog. Josh has been with us for over 6 years and in that time, he’s helped our eCommerce clients to achieve substantial business growth. He’s also responsible for the day-to-day management of our own eCommerce business FW Direct, which has seen significant growth in recent years. Here’s everything else you need to know about Josh, with a selection of his amazing drone photos and our favourite Otis photos thrown in:

Who are you and what’s your role?

I’m Joshua, the Google PPC Strategist at Browndog. I look after Google advertising accounts for a wide range of clients from B2B to B2C and lead generation to eCommerce.

Tell us some background…

I studied Business Studies at the University of Huddersfield and during my course, found a keen interest and passion for digital marketing. My course had the flexibility to fit around the individuals’ desirable areas of business, so I specialised in digital marketing and undertook a year’s work placement for a big art and craft manufacturing company. Following this, I tailored my dissertation around online customer acquisition and received a 2:1 grade at the end of my final university year.

Upon completion of my degree, I rejoined the art and craft company, where I was responsible for project managing a brand new 4,000 SKU eCommerce website, including all pricing, content, photography, and finer details. Following this, I would dip my toe into Google advertising for the first time.

It was throughout my time at the art and craft company, that I found a real passion for Google advertising – I loved everything about it. This wasn’t a career move because working in digital marketing was trendy and hip, it was a move I made because I had found something I was generally driven to understand and succeed in. I undertook professional training and committed to driving the business forward.

Over time in this role, my Google Ads skills developed massively, and I eventually outgrew my role and started to seek my next challenge…

What kind of projects do you enjoy working on?

Whilst from a Google Ads perspective I am an all-rounder, working with all types of business shapes and sizes, my favourite accounts to get stuck into are medium sized eCommerce businesses, especially those that offer something unique. There’s a thrill of bringing in trackable revenue results for these types of businesses, that isn’t quite matched when working on lead-gen projects. That’s not to say I don’t love being challenged, whatever the business model and offering entail.

What projects have you worked on this year?

I’ve taken on quite a few eCommerce clients this year, my favourite one from a challenge point of view being a clog (think, Croc) footwear manufacturer. They had worked with a previous agency but didn’t think they were getting much bang for their buck. It’s always a bigger challenge taking on an existing account, because the clients have an idea of where they want to be and understand current levels of return – so the baseline is clear to see for everyone – and improvements or declines in performance are clear to see for everyone. In essence, you’ve got to hit the ground running to re-ignite the clients confidence.

It’s also a challenge because often their confidence has been knocked if they’ve tried it before and the results were lacking. Thankfully, I did manage to hit the ground running, and I still get the same buzz when I deliver success for clients now, as the day I started out in this industry.

Where in the world would you like to visit?

I’m more of an adventurous holiday goer, rather than a lay-on-a-beach-drinking-sangrias all day sort of guy. Although, I have to balance that with my other half’s idea of a good holiday.

I’m really into drone photography, so my general rule is that I want to go somewhere with striking landscapes. Next on my list are North Norway and Finland, inspired by my road trip across Iceland this year. I want to see what the Nordic regions have to offer, and fortunately cold holidays don’t bother me in the slightest.

What unpopular opinion do you have?

Much to our director Alexis’s dismay…

Puns are basically crutches for people who aren’t funny.

What are you loving at the moment?

My dog Otis. I’ve wanted a dog all my life and I’ve finally found myself in a position where I can dedicate the time to give a dog the love and attention that they deserve. Working from home, and the flexibility to take Otis to the office, made it a no brainer for me to commit and take the leap into puppy life.

He’s 5 months old right now, mischievous and attention draining, but I love every single minute of it.

How do you spend your free time?

I love drone photography, playing the drums and going out on adventures. I’ve not quite found a way to incorporate all three into one activity, just yet.

What’s a life goal of yours?

It sounds cliché, but just improving myself every day is my goal. I want to be better today than I was yesterday and strive to be better than I am today, tomorrow. I’m not perfect by any means, but just understanding imperfections and being self-critical of them, I see as a means to continue to achieve my goal.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Predominantly an early bird, but I’ll show up whenever I am needed, morning or night.
