Why it’s worth revisiting old content on your website

TL;DR:
So, why is it worth revisiting old content on your website? If there’s one thing we want you to take away from this blog, it’s that refreshing existing content is one of the most efficient, cost-effective ways to improve SEO performance. If done consistently, it can deliver results as good as or better than brand new content.

Creating high-quality blog content isn’t cheap – it takes time and effort (and sometimes budget), so you want to make the most of it. The right, optimised content can build visibility, drive website traffic and support your wider marketing goals, and is arguably one of the most important marketing activities you can do with your website.

As part of your SEO strategy, one thing you might be overlooking is older content. As the search landscape changes and competitors publish new content, Google (other search engines are available…) will update how results are displayed, and even your strongest performing blogs and pages can slip down the rankings.

Now is the time to see this as an opportunity, not as a sign that your content is failing.

Your existing content is still valuable

Let’s not put the blog out to pasture too soon – there’s benefits to older content that only time can bring. Older blogs and pages are already indexed and have gained authority over time, and this is a great foundation to work with. Rather than starting from scratch, you can refresh your existing content to:

  • Strengthen rankings with updated information
  • Target new or evolving search intent
  • Improve click-through rates with better titles and meta descriptions
  • Update to align with current SEO best practices
  • Compete with newer, better optimised competitor content

We’ve seen that in many cases, a content refresh can outperform brand new content, and it can do it faster because you’re not starting from scratch.

Client example: GK Products

We’ve recently seen firsthand the benefits of refreshing old content when we re-worked a blog for our client GK Products.

As part of their long-term content strategy, we’ve been creating and refining blog content for some time. More recently, we reviewed older pieces and identified where updates could improve performance.

One blog in particular stood out; “How to stop K Rend going green in 5 easy steps”, originally published in March 2024. After giving it a little spring clean and optimising it for current search intent, the results were quick and measurable:

  • It regained the top ranking position for its target search term
  • It generated 420 clicks in just 3 months
  • It became GK Pro’s best performing blog (again)

We didn’t need to find a new topic or give it a full re-write, just a strategic refresh.

Why this approach works

SEO is constantly changing, so your approach and your content needs to move with it. As more and more competition appears from AI-driven search features, maintaining your visibility will require ongoing optimisation, not one-off activity. Businesses that regularly review and improve their content are far more likely to:

  • Maintain strong rankings over time
  • Better adapt to algorithm and search behaviour changes
  • Maximise the return on investment of their existing content
  • Build long-term authority in their space

Realistically speaking, this is something you need to be doing as part of your content and SEO strategy.

Try this exercise

Search a term that you think you should be ranking highly for with a specific page or blog. If your page is visible, then that’s great, but if you cannot see your page, take a look at who is ranking highly and who is featured in the AI Overview. Take note of what they have included and see what’s missing from your page/blog. This will give you an idea of what you need to be doing to refresh your website and improve your visibility.

How we can support you with ongoing content

A structured, ongoing content plan can make all the difference to your search prominence – something we specialise in.

Our content & SEO retainers begin with a comprehensive audit and strategy, plotting exactly where you are now, and planning the journey to get you where you want to be. Then, we work within your budget to provide an ongoing monthly support package; monitoring, adjusting and writing fresh content, whether that be blogs (long-form and short-form), landing pages, case studies or insights pieces (or a combination).

Just like our client GK Products, you can benefit from us:

  • Identifying underperforming content with potential to work harder
  • Updating and re-optimising key pages
  • Spotting new keyword opportunities
  • Keeping your website updated using current SEO best practices

We often find that clients only have time to take a reactive approach when they’re working on day-to-day marketing tasks. Our retainers allow time for a proactive approach that contributes to long-term growth and success online.
